Joan Johnson

Joan Eyles Johnson is a playwright, poet, and author of short stories. She has had plays off-Broadway and on NPR, poetry in literary journals since her college years when Robert Graves put four of her poems in an issue of his Mediterranean Review, and since then has had poems and stories published in the following: Scream When you Burn (Rothco Press), Ambit, Reed, Sou’wester, The Raven’s Perch, and Foliate Oak. Her work also appears on JSTOR.


In 2016, her short story “The Night Packet” published in Fiction Southeast won her the Ernest Hemingway Prize for Short Fiction. She retired after fifteen years teaching in the graduate division of Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles to the mountains in the San Bernardino National Forest where she operates a retreat for other writers who want to escape to a four season resort above it all.
