After penning his multi-part, sci-fi story Invasion of the Blood-Spitters in primary school, Gavin realized there was no going back. Following a Philosophy and English degree at Edinburgh University, he developed an interest in screenwriting and directing and took an MA in Film and TV Drama in Sheffield. Gavin’s first script, The Beachcomber was shortlisted for the Moonstone Writers’ Programme.
In the early 2000s, having worked first as a journalist and then marketing/salesperson for commercials directors, Gavin created short films and music videos for artists including Primal Scream, Jet, and The Veils. His 2008 short film Beyond led to a further collaboration with actress Annelise Hesme, who co-starred in 2015 with Kris Marshall in his debut feature Sparks and Embers, which he wrote and directed. Two of Gavin’s subsequent screenplays are in development – Nitrate, a psychological thriller and 20 Questions, a low budget chiller.
A keen runner since his thirties, Gavin has published two books about his long-distance adventures, Downhill from Here and Running the Orient. The latter book is about his 2018 run from Paris to Istanbul (2300 miles), following the route of the 1883 Orient Express. He has recently begun to revisit short story writing as well as completing two novels in the crime/literary fiction genres. He is currently working on his first science fiction novel, Stutter, about a self-help group for people stuck in recurring time loops.
